From Little League to NCAA National Championships, we have our fingers on the pulse of everything your tournament needs to shine. In the past two years alone we have hosted the NYS High School Wrestling and Girls Basketball Championships, the ECAC Men’s Hockey Championships, and the MAAC and America East Basketball Championships. Remember Siena’s mesmerizing run to the Sweet Sixteen? It started in Albany. How about Syracuse’s path to their first ever NCAA Basketball title? It went through Albany. Add that to the huge number of youth and club tournaments in the area, and you have a championship pedigree that can stand on its own against the toughest of competition.

Why not bring your amateur athletes to the city where their favorite professional athletes get their start? With minor league affiliates in the MLB and NHL, as well as semi-pro basketball and football teams and Division-1 programs in 40 sports across four colleges, Albany is a true training ground in the Northeast.

You don’t need to play an organized sport to enjoy Albany’s countless other recreational activities, either. Golf, skiing, hiking, curling, and fishing are just a few of the numerous recreational opportunities in our county. Albany is also the perfect affordable “hub and spoke” destination, and is a short distance away from Cooperstown, Saratoga, Syracuse, and even Boston!

WHO WE ARE...
The Sports Foundation of the Greater Capital Region is a not-for-profit organization, whose mission is to promote NY’s Capital Region through sports. Its goals are to improve the quality of life and enhance economic development throughout the region by maintaining and acquiring diversity of amateur sporting events, and by creating other special events.

OUR GOALS...
* To provide area residents with entertainment through the provision and promotion of quality sports and sports-related events
* To provide instruction and education in sports for youth
* To help boys and girls understand the benefits of participation in athletic programs
* To promote the welfare of young people, including those at-risk, through sports, thus aiding in the prevention of delinquency.

WHAT WE DO...
The Sports Foundation of the Greater Capital Region helps identify events, activities, sites, and sponsoring organizations, and provides technical and volunteer services. Financial investment for the programs and activities of the Sports Foundation of the Capital Region is secured from local businesses and individuals and from revenue from events and activities.

OUR OTHER EVENTS...
The Sports Foundation of the Greater Capital Region has worked with regional and national athletic organizations such as the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), the Metro Atlantic Conference (MAAC), and the America East Conference. The Sports Foundation of the Greater Capital Region achieves part of its mission by creating Fan Fests associated with events such as the NCAA mens' hockey, basketball, and wrestling championships, ECAC Hockey Championships, and the MAAC and America East basketball tournaments. The Fan Fests increase tourism in the Capital Region, provide athletic skills training to young people, and provide entertainment and/or enrichment to audiences of all age groups.

Section II Scholar Athletes

2011 Scholar Athletes | 2010 Scholar Athletes | 1995-2009

The athletic directors, principals, and guidance departments at Capital Region schools are invited to nominate one young man and one young woman from their school's senior class. These nominees have exemplified the highest achievements, in both scholastic and athletic ability. Once the two nominees from each school have been submitted, judges from area colleges and universities evaluate and choose the top four males and top four females. The eight young men and women finalists will contend for the top awards, which include special trophies and savings bonds. In the Sports Foundation and community's eyes, all nominees are 'winners' because they have been selected by their school for recognition. All nominees will be featured in a special section in the Times Union and receive a special award during the ceremony.

THE SCHOLAR ATHLETES AWARDS DINNER...
The Scholar Athlete Awards Dinner recognizes the outstanding athletic and academic achievements of high school students in our region. This event is the Foundation's annual centerpiece event that focuses on the goals and objectives of the organization. Scholar athletes come from throughout the Section II region of NYS and represent a wide variety of sport.
